Why do People Buy Antique Books?
Antique books are collected for many different reasons. They really do bring a lot of pleasure into many people. But the reality is Antique books are a lot more delicate than many collectibles and therefore should be always handled and stored carefully due to their age. However people’s interest in antique books continues to grow. So what are some of the reasons why people buy antique books?
Some people get involved in collecting sets of books like by a particular author or from a particular period of time. These could be technical books in a particular area or say fiction by an author like Earnest Hemingway.
Others enjoy antique books for the tremendous wealth of knowledge from the past that they give us. It is really interesting to learn how they used to do thing from a technical book from the past. I myself have a few antique books in the area of construction. Not because of their great value because they are worth very little, but because of my interest in construction and understanding the way they used to do things. Technical books can often be rather dry but from books on history or historical event the style of the author often gives us a whole lot more information than just the words written on the page.
Some people just absolutely love the look and feel of antique books in their home. They are both beautiful to look at in a set of shelves and can be delightful in their content in the way they bring laughter and joy into our lives and help us understand ourselves and those around us.
Others invest in antique books in order to resell for a profit. While an antique book is nothing more than a pile of old paper it can have tremendous value. On the other hand an old antique book may be of little value at all. Someone once said “I have seen racks of hundred year old books for a dollar a piece and could not find a single one that I felt was worth a dollar”.
So from the perspective of a book dealer, what they really want to know is how quickly they can resell a book for a profit. So though the value of a book is important being able to resell it for a profit is more important. Therefore a book worth $50 which people are looking to buy can be worth more to them than a book valued at $500 that is not likely to sell for several years. And there are many books that sit in inventory for years.
Some other things that ad to a books value are. How popular a book is certainly adds to its value. Also the rarer a book is, often the higher its value is. Another thing is if the book was signed by the author generally the more valued an antique book is. One more thing that will determine the value of an antique book is if it was owned by some really famous person in the past.
Well antique books like anything else are worth exactly what a buyer is willing to pay for it. That value often changes time and again depending on the market. It is possible though to get a bit of an idea of a particular books value by doing some proper research.
Yes there is a lot to learn but there is a lot of free help on the internet including this site and you don’t need a lot of money to get started either. And although some people may argue that these old books are all out of date and have nothing to do with today’s world. Other people find tremendous value in collecting antique books because they see them as having the history of the world hidden in their pages.
If you are considering starting to buy or sell antique books then you should be ready for an enjoyable journey.
